The armor was very heavy, especially in the front, where it was 7 inches (178mm). Unfortunately, this, along with the weight of the huge turret required to house the larger gun, made it very heavy, giving it a slow top speed and making it mechanically unreliable. Production history
The chassis was from the "Universal tank" design of the FV201 series, started shortly after that of the A41 Centurion. The 201 series was to have used a common hull for all uses (self-propelled artillery, armoured personnel carrier, 3 varieties of tank, etc.). In the development stages, the FV201 hull was used with a Centurion turret to give the FV 221 Caenarvon.
