Conrad L. Hall (June 21, 1926 - January 4, 2003) was a top-billed Hollywood cinematographer. A three-time Academy Award-winner, he received Oscars for shooting Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969), American Beauty (1999), and Road to Perdition (2002). Born in Papeete, Tahiti, French Polynesia, he was the son of writer James Norman Hall and Sarah (Lala) Winchester Hall, who was part-Polynesian. Hall attended the University of Southern California intending to study journalism but drifted instead to the university's cinema school, from which he graduated in 1949. He worked on documentaries, in television (The Outer Limits) and minor films (including cult classic Incubus), and as a studio camera operator before moving up to cinematographer in major studio films in the mid 1960s. Hall died in 2003 due to complications from bladder cancer. His Oscar nomination and award for his work on Road to Perdition were posthumous, and his award was accepted by his son, Conrad W. Conrad Hall's extensive filmography (he was working up until he died), includes a number of popular films: Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969), Tequila Sunrise (1988), American Beauty (1999, for which he deservedly won an Oscar), Panic Room (2002), and Road to Perdition (2002, for which he won another Oscar, this one posthumously).
Hall filmed the murders at night, in the actual Clutter house, using only flashlights, and the effect is truly creepy.
He noted that Hall made 99% of the decisions on the photographic setup, further demonstration of his talent and the respect he inspired.

Conrad Hall described his reactions to learning he had been chosen to receive the ASC Lifetime Achievement Award at the 8th annual awards ceremony.  It hit him like a bolt of lightning coming out of the clear blue sky.  It was totally unexpected and completely overwhelming.  It literally took his breath away.
Hall was in the first wave of a new generation of cinematographers who literally broke into the industry during the 1950s and '60s.  The odds against Hall becoming a cinematographer in Hollywood were incalculable.  His father was James Norman Hall, an ace pilot and captain in the Lafayette Escadrille which fought for
Hall describes his own approach to cinematography as mainly instinct driven.  But his instincts are based on a lifetime of impressions stored in visual memory.  He frequently compares himself to a river fed by many small streams representing the different experiences in his life.
