Conroe is a city located in Montgomery County, Texas, and is situated in East Texas. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 36,811. It is the county seat of Montgomery County6.

Conroe is located at 30°18'58" North, 95°27'32" West (30.316124, -95.458801)1.


According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 98.1 km˛ (37.9 mi˛). 97.9 km˛ (37.8 mi˛) of it is land and 0.2 km˛ (0.1 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 0.21% water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 36,811 people, 13,145 households, and 8,728 families residing in the city. The population density is 376.1/km˛ (974.1/mi˛). There are 14,378 housing units at an average density of 146.9/km˛ (380.5/mi˛). The racial makeup of the city is 71.16% White, 11.13% African American, 0.40% Native American, 0.95% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 13.38% from other races, and 2.93% from two or more races. 32.62% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 13,145 households out of which 35.3% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 47.5% are married couples living together, 13.5% have a female householder with no husband present, and 33.6% are non-families. 27.2% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.5% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.73 and the average family size is 3.33.


In the city the population is spread out with 28.1% under the age of 18, 13.4% from 18 to 24, 31.6% from 25 to 44, 17.3% from 45 to 64, and 9.7% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 29 years. For every 100 females there are 101.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 98.9 males.


The median income for a household in the city is $34,123, and the median income for a family is $37,201. Males have a median income of $29,468 versus $23,025 for females. The per capita income for the city is $16,841. 19.3% of the population and 15.0% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 26.3% of those under the age of 18 and 11.8% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.


Education

The Academy of Science and Technology is a program within the Conroe Independent School District, housed at Oak Ridge High School. The academy is for students interested in having a high school education with a emphasis on mathematics, science, and technology. The Academy of Science and Technology is a part of the National Consortium of Specialized Secondary Schools in Math, Science, and Technology (NCSSSMST). Class is limited to about 65 students from the Oak Ridge/Woodlands High School feeder system. To get in, one would have to take a test, turn in an application, and have an interview. After being accepted, students generally attend FISH camp, which is about two weeks before the beginning of the school year. To graduate, one would have to complete all Texas high school graduation requirements, 14 exploration credits, and an approved internship. The Academy is located at Oak Ridge High School in Conroe, TX and will move sophmores and freshmen for the 2005-2006 school year, current (2004-2005) Academy sophmores and juniors will complete their remaining Academy years at Oak Ridge. As of October 31, 2004, the Academy's headmaster is Ronald Laugen. Ingrid Pariseau teaches both Honors Geometry and PreCal in the Academy. Rick Perzan teaches PreAP Biology, AP Biology, and AP Environmental Science. Larry Walker teaches Scientific Research and Design and PreAP Chemistry.
