Conservative Grace Brethren Churches, International (CGBCI) - a recent conservative division from the Fellowship of Grace Brethren Churches. The Fellowship of Grace Brethren Churches is a theologically conservative fellowship of Brethren churches descended from the Schwarzenau Brethren movement of Alexander Mack of Germany. ...


In 1939 the National Fellowship of Brethren Churches developed from struggles that occurred within the progressive Brethren Church during the 1920s and 1930s. Later the National Fellowship became known as the Fellowship of Grace Brethren Churches (FGBC). In 1992, due to doctrinal disagreements in the FGBC, the Conservative Grace Brethren Churches, International was formed. Headquarters are in Mansfield, Ohio. The Conservative Grace Brethren maintain a 12 article statement of faith similar to the FGBC statement of faith. In 2003 CGBCI had 46 churches in 15 states of the United States, with the main concentration being in Ohio. They have foreign missionaries in Africa and Germany. There are several Brethren groups that are not related to the Schwarzenau Brethren movement, such as the Plymouth Brethren that arose in England and Ireland early in the 19th century, and the United Brethren originating in 18th century Pennsylvania with William Otterbein and Martin Boehm.

The Brethren movement began in 1708 in Wittgenstein, Germany, in the village of Schwarzenau.
The Church of the Brethren is the largest; followed by the Fellowship of Grace Brethren Churches; The Brethren Church; the Old German Baptist Brethren; the Dunkard Brethren; and the Conservative Grace Brethren Churches, International.
The old stone bridge with its graceful arches, so often appearing in photographs and so long associated in the imagination of the Brethren with their origins, was torn down in 1974 and replaced by a functional modern bridge.
