A music school or conservatory is an institution dedicated to teaching the art of music, including playing of musical instruments, musical composition, musicianship, music history and music theory. The terms conservatoire and conservatorium are also used in some English-speaking countries when referring to music schools.
In some music schools, other standard subjects taught as secondary (such as at the Yehudi Menuhin School).

The Conservatorium was established in 1952 as a branch of the State Conservatorium of Music.
In 1990 the Conservatorium amalgamated with the University of Newcastle.
The Conservatorium's music facilities include a 500 seat concert hall with its Smenge organ, 4 concert grand pianos (2 Stuart and Sons and 2 Steinways), 40 teaching and practice studios, a number of early music instruments including 3 harpsichords and 2 fortepianos.
