He was born in Liège, Belgium and began studying mathematics in 1869, at the Université de Liège. His professor of analysis was Eugène Charles Catalan. He then became himself a professor at the Université de Liège in 1882, where he stayed until his retreat in 1922. During this time, he worked mainly on the theory of algebraic forms.
