A constituent assembly is a body elected with the purpose of drafting, and in some cases, adopting a constitution. Examples of constituent assemblies include the: - National Constituent Assembly - formed in 1789 during the French Revolution

- Russian Constituent Assembly - formed in January 1918 during the Russian October Revolution
- German National Assembly - enacted the Weimar Constitution in 1919, bringing into being the Weimar Republic.
- Constituent Assembly of Lithuania - elected in 1920 worked for two years and enacted the 1922 contitution.
- Third Dáil - also known as the Irish Constituent Assembly, was elected in 1922 and, in the same year, enacted the Constitution of the Irish Free State by means of which the Irish Free State seceded from the United Kingdom.
- Syrian Constituent Assemblies - formed in 1930 following the defeat of the Ottoman Empire and the introduction of the French Mandate, and in 1949 to reintroduce civilian rule after a series of military governments.
