Converge are a four-piece band based out of Salem, Massachusetts. Playing a blend of hardcore punk and extreme metal since 1990, [1] this outfit helped define many of the rudiments of the metalcore genre. It is notable, however, that Converge have a unique sound when compared to most other metalcore acts, such as As I Lay Dying, Bleeding Through and Killswitch Engage. Description

Converge's influences range from hardcore punk bands, such as Black Flag, Negative Approach, The Accused and Born Against; metal bands like Black Sabbath, Godflesh, Slayer, and Entombed; and proto-metalcore bands Starkweather and Rorschach. The group's musical style consists of complex guitar work and off-time polyrhythmic drumming, which leads some to classify them as mathcore, which is best exemplified on their album Jane Doe. There is much debate over where exactly Converge fall, genre-wise, due to their wide musical range, breaking of conventional boundaries, and willingness to try and push in new directions. Converge themselves eschew classification into hardcore or metal, the genres they are closest to, and simply define their music as "aggressive music". History

Converge formed in the winter of 1990. They first started by playing covers of hardcore punk, punk rock and heavy metal songs, being self-confessed "hardcore kids with leftover Slayer riffs". The band soon graduated to playing live performances in 1991, after recording some demos on a 4-track recorder. Their popularity began to rise with the release of their breakthrough album, Jane Doe, which is considered by many their best work to date. Their records have gradually become more expensively and extensively produced, having moved from the independent label Equal Vision Records to the much larger and more mainstream (yet still independent) punk label, Epitaph Records. Converge - Biography - AOL Music (448 words)
Incredibly prolific punk-metal road dogs Converge were formed in the winter of 1990-1991, and after several singles, compilation appearances, and the requisite growing pains, they released their first full-length, Halo in a Haystack, in 1994.
Brodsky left the band that same year to be replaced by bassist Nate Newton; Bellorado exited in 1999 and, soon enough, the band had welcomed drummer Ben Koller into the fray.
Converge was by now regarded as one of the most original and innovative bands to emerge from the punk underground.
Kurt Ballou (Converge) interview // Interviews // Features // Lambgoat (2769 words)
Sometimes, it's a band that I don't know as people but I really like the music and I think I can do a good job in recording them and sometimes I might not know the people or care about the music, but if their heart is in the right place then I'll do it.
Converge is of course my number one form of advertising for my studio, I don't advertise it any other way and as someone who is in a somewhat-known hardcore band, most of the bands I record are hardcore bands.
A band can do the same things, with the same producer, in the same studio, with the same equipment but if they can't play their instruments properly or don't have good songs then it's not going to make a good album.
