Encyclopedia > Coolah

Coolah is a village and local government area in the central northern part of the Australian state of New South Wales. Coolah Shire includes the villages of Coolah, Dunedoo, and Mendooran. On the northeastern side of the area is the Liverpool Range with the Coolah Tops National Park. Most of the region is agricultural with sheep and cattle raising and crops grown along the Talbragar River and Coolaburragundy River valleys. Because there are no major regional towns in the area, and no major roads pass through it, the Coolah region is very quiet and bucolic.

The Coolah area was first settled by pastoralists around 1840.

Coolah was served by a branch railway from c1920 to c1970.

Walkabout - Coolah (1559 words)
Coolah is the principal town of the Coolah Shire.
It is situated by the Coolaburragundy River, 89 km north-east of Mudgee and 352 km from Sydney.
For these reasons locals argue that the Coolah area lies at the origin of the Australian saying 'beyond the fl stump', meaning beyond the limits of civilisation, though it has other contenders (see Goolgowi).
