Copa Interamericana (927 words)
Cup contested between the winners of the Copa Libertadores of South America and the Copa CONCACAF of the North and Central American champions.
The value of the Cup has further been diminished by the fact that a number of Copa Libertadores champions in the nineties couldn't be bothered and the runners-up played for them, such as Universidad Católica for 1993 Copa Libertadores winners São Paulo and Atlético Nacional for 1995 winners Grêmio.
In 2002 a new competition, the Copa Pan-Americana including teams from all parts of the American continent was supposed to start but eventually cancelled (and replaced by another South American attempt to get a kind of UEFA Cup, the Copa Sudamericana).
The Voyageurs: Canadian Soccer Supporters - Copa Sudamericana [R] (488 words)
The only active ones are the Copa Libertadores, Copa Sudamericana and Recopa Sudamericana.
- used to be a qualifying mini-tournament for the Copa Libertadores, played in the autumn of the previous year, involving clubs from Venezuela (because they were considered the weakest in South America) and Mexico (because they aren't from South America)
- used to be played between the Copa Libertadores winners and the CONCACAF champions, but was skipped in many years and hasn't been played at all since 1998 (the planned Copa Panamericana was supposed to be a sort of replacement)
