Encyclopedia > Copenhagen Ducks

The Copenhagen Ducks are a professional paintball team based in Kobenhavn, Denmark. They compete in the European Millenium series as well as the Northern European Series. When it was still in existance, the Ducks were one of 8 teams invited to compete in the European X-Ball League. The team consists of players from several European countries. Paintball is a sport whose participants use markers to shoot paintballs (roughly marble-sized, .68 caliber, gelatin capsules filled with colored polyethylene glycol paint) at other players. ...

History

The Copenhagen Ducks actually began as the Ugly Ducklings, which was formed in 1990. The team became a serious competitive team in 1994, and the Ugly Ducklings began to travel around Northern Europe. Between the years of 1994 and 1997, competing as Amateurs, the Ducklings travelled around Europe, competing in tournaments. They won many tournaments, gaining quite a reputation.

"The Ugly Ducklings began to play abroad in 1994 where the team was the first Scandinavian team ever to reach a podium finish at the Mayhem Master, then the largest paintball event on the European calendar. 1995 saw the team win seven tournaments including Mayhem Scandinavia (Sweden) and MIG International Games (Germany). We picked up our first sponsors giving us the opportunity to travel even more, and in 1996 the Ugly Ducklings played in countries like England, Holland, Germany, Sweden and of course Denmark. As expected the competition was tougher at international level, but the Ugly Ducklings still managed to stay in the top 4 every time.

1997 was the last year for the Ugly Ducklings as amateurs and what a year! The team played four tournaments in England and won them all including the World Hyperball Championships and all three NPPS tournaments, which were at that time the biggest events in Europe. Nine first places and a single second place was the season result, all at major events, and we decided that it was time to take the big step up to the Professional ranks." Taken from: 1

Furthermore, victories include a win at the 7-Man tournament in Toulouse, France.

When the EXL (European X-Ball League) formed, it invited the Ducks to join. Because X-Ball is a completely different format from the more traditional 7-Man format, the team split up to pursue both venues. The Ugly Ducklings continued (and continue to) play 7-Man, while the Ducks absorbed several teams, including the noted Berserks (who recently split off from the Ducks to pursue their own career). For other uses, see Berserker (disambiguation). ...

Since then, the EXL has ceased to exist, and the Ducks have continued playing in the Millenium and NES series.
