History

Copetown was initially used by the French as a small fur trading outpost to trade with the Algonkian and Huron aboriginal tribes in the area. It was called Fort Myrackin meaning "crossroads" as their were many different native tribes that passed through the area. By the 1700's it had become a major area of concern for the English who were constantly thwarted in their attempts to gain more land in the New World. At the end of the War of Spanish Succession in 1713, the small outpost was ceded to the English in the Treaty of Utrecht.

The English saw the Fort as a strategic location that could help them keep their other settlements safe. They appointed Sir James Cope in charge of settlement, and military personal in the area. The town was then named after him (Copetown) who promoted settlement and grew the population from a megree 500 to over 3000 in the space of his twelve years in charge. Fort Cope (or Copetown) also had a standing army of 750 at the outbreak of the Seven Years War in 1754.

The Fort was also a major area of interest to the natives and the French who had been very angered by the forts transferal to English possession. In 1759, fearing the severely battered town could be easily overrun by a joint French-Native attack the commanders in charge of English military sent Major R. Andrews along with 750 Redcoats, and four twelve pound cannons. They also sent Lieutenant Montgomery (of naval command) who was in charge of a small contingent of naval officers as well as the four cannons (which had come from the ship H.M.S. Regency) They stopped a small war party of French-Aboriginal militia in the Spring, but then Major Andrews and several of the other Army officers (Lieutenant Grieves, Lt. Major Kennedy) turned traitor and joined the French and Aboriginals. They began to attack the naval officers and those in the village, in an attempt to bring it under their command. Lieutenant Montgomery and his gunnery sergeant Roger Welland managed a secret night attack on the citadel of Copetown (now held by traitors) and they defeated them, killing both Lt. Major Kennedy and Lt. Grieves, but Major Andrews managed to escape. Lt. Montgomery had all of the captured traitors placed in the town jail, he left Midshipman Roberts in charge of the militia and other soldiers and Mayor Wilkins in charge of the town. Then heading out on his own chased after Andrews, he spent a year in the wilderness in the dense forests that surrounded the area, by the time he got back he learned that Andrews had made it back to the fort before him and turned the town against him, and his troops had been jailed. Montgomery slipped into the town at night and freed his soldiers, then using the some native allies he had met in his travels they attacked Andrews on March 15th 1760, which started the 3rd Battle of Copetown. (The 1st Battle was the one fought between the English and the French-Native militia, the 2nd Battle was the one fought between Andrews and Montgomery. Montgomery slew Andrews but was cut down in a charge at the Copetown church, where a large amount of weapons and supplies had been stored, he died a few minutes later. His last words were reportedly "Charge on men, for the glory of England".

After the Seven Years war, the fort remained in British hands but its numbers continued to dwindle until they reached a record low of 300.

In the 1800's the Fort walls were strengthened in case of an attack from the Americans, it was also used as a rest station for many different groups of militia in the War of 1812. In later years the Queen's Rangers were also stationed in several log cabins in the area and used the town as a rest station.

In 1894 the towns walls were dismantled as they had not been maintained and the weather of the area had resulted in them becoming very unsafe.
