Encyclopedia > Coppermine (microprocessor)

Coppermine is a type of microprocessor, a particular version of the Pentium III, made by Intel. The processor was released on October 25, 1999. Coppermine Pentium III processors are made on a 0.18-micrometre process, reducing the die size compared to previous Pentium III processors. The Coppermine processor also featured 256 KiB of L2 cache. This cache, although smaller than the previous Pentium III's 512 KiB of L2 cache, was up to four times faster than previous caches. Coppermine processors debuted at 700 and 733 MHz (with 450- and 500-MHz versions for notebooks), but eventually scaled to 1 GHz. A 1.13-GHz version was released, but proved so unstable that it was removed from the market. Coppermine was eventually replaced by 0.13-micrometre Pentium IIIs that ran stable at 1.13 GHz and above.
