Coral Reef is locally known as "Miami's Mega Magnet School" since it has a magnet program for every subject it offers. The school does not serve the surrouding neighborhoods, but instead takes in applications from middle school students all over the county and selects them depending on ability for their nationally accredited magnet programs. Students living around the Coral Reef area attend G. Holmes Braddock High School. Coral Reef does take in students from Southwood Middle School's magnet music program, though students who attend Southwood and are not part of the music magnet program must continue onto Miami Southridge High School.
