In the APG and APG II system for classification of angiosperms, the names eudicots or tricolpates are applied to a clade, a monophyletic group. This clade includes most of the (former) dicotyledons. The remaining, and more primitive, (former) dicots are sometimes referred to as palaeodicots ("palaeo−" = old) even though this is a paraphyletic group. The name "eudicots" is formed by adding the botanical prefix "eu−" (= "true") to "dicots". The eudicots have those characters that many older textbooks associate with dicots. Since "dicots" is short for "dicotyledons" it is tempting to jump to the conclusion that "eudicots" is short for "eudicotyledons". However, the name is "eudicots".


The name tricolpates refers to the structure of the pollen. The group has tricolpate pollen, or forms derived from it. These pollen have three or more pores set in furrows called colpi. In contrast, most of the other seed plants (that is the gymnosperms, the monocots and the palaeodicots) produce monosulcate pollen, with a single pore set in a differently oriented groove called the sulcus. The name "tricolpates" is preferred under the PhyloCode.
