Cornwallis was born in London on December 31, 1738, and educated at Eton College and the University of Cambridge.
Cornwallis generally opposed the policies that led to the American Revolution, but in 1775 he accepted a military command as a major general.
Cornwallis was responsible for the British victory at Brandywine Creek, Pennsylvania, in September 1777, and later in the same month he occupied Philadelphia.
