Encyclopedia > Corpo della Gendarmeria

The Corpo della Gendarmeria dello Stato della Città del Vaticano is the Police of Vatican City. It has 130 personel. Apart from its own police force, the security of Vatican is handled by the Swiss Guards while the Italian Police takes part in criminal investigations. Prior to 2002 the police force of the Vatican City was called Corpo di Vigilanza dello Stato della Città del Vaticano. Swiss Guards have been Swiss who fought for various European powers from the 15th century until the 19th century, called up from the separate Swiss cantons and placed at the disposal of various foreign powers by treaties (the capitulations), in return for money payments. ... Italian public security is provided by five separate police forces: Arma dei Carabinieri (paramilitary police), Guardia di Finanza (financial and customs police, also organized as a military force), Polizia di Stato (state police), Polizia Penitenziaria (penitentiary police) and Corpo Forestale dello Stato (forestry police). ...

It is led by Domenico Giani since June, 2006, when he replaced the long-serving Camillo Cibin.
