Corporal Hicks is the highest ranking soldier on the moon after his fellow Marines are slaughtered by the Xenomorphs present on LV-426. Lieutenant Gorman, his commanding officer, is knocked unconscious after a Xenomorph attacks their transport. As the leader of his fellow Marines, Corporal Hicks made the decision to use thermonuclear war heads to obliterate the moon from orbit in order to eradicate the Xenomorphs.
