After leading Lucchese, in the Italian Serie B, almost to promotion in the top-flight, in 1991 he was chosen by FC Internazionale chairman Ernesto Pellegrini as a replacement for Giovanni Trapattoni, who had just won the scudetto with the nerazzurri side. However, his career at Inter turned out to be extremely unsatisfactory and he was sacked after a few games in the national league and a disappointing UEFA Cup campaign, ended with an early elimination by Boavista FC.
