The Eurostat scandal In 1999, it came to light that Eurostat officials had allocated inaccurate amounts of funds to contracts and then spent the excess inappropriately - this practice was used only with certain 'trustworthy' contractors. The scandal resulted in the European Parliament considering to adopt a motion of censure which would have forced the entire Commission to resign. However, the Santer Commission resigned on its own accord. - Marta Andreasen A Spanish accountant employed in 2002 to head the Commission’s accounts department of 130 staff. She criticised the accounting system for being open to fraud and also criticised the Commission for not having a single system, but using Excel spreadsheets which allows aleteration without trace for producing figures. Mrs. Andreasen raised her criticisms internally, but made no progress with her superior. She then wrote to Commissioner Michaele Schreyer and the Commission President, Romano Prodi. She again received no answers and so went to members of the EU Parliament’s Budget Control Committee. At this stage the press reported the criticisms. She was suspended from her job by the Commission and was officially fired on December 12, 2004.
