Species

The common name pampas grass is frequently applied to any in the genus Cortaderia, and (incorrectly) to Erianthus / Saccharum ravennae. In horticultural use, it most often refers to Cortaderia selloana. Many people also call all species of Cortaderia growing wild "pampas grass," which may be the increasingly weedy C. selloana, or other species. Most often, this will be C. jubata, a common and serious weed of coastal California, Hawaii, and some other areas. Avoid planting any species of Cortaderia other than C. selloana as they are known, or pose a risk of becoming serious, naturalized Purple flowers of the highly invasive Pattersons Curse infest the Warrumbungle National Park in New South Wales, Australia. ...invasive species.

  • Cortaderia quila _ in horticultural use, a synonym for Cortaderia jubata.
  • Cortaderia rudiuscula _ A relative of C. jubata, also reproducing asexually. May become a serious pest as C. jubata has done, if planted, as one plant can produce much fertile seed, and it may be more cold_tolerant.
  • Cortaderia richardii _ One of about 4 Cortaderia species native to New Zealand, sometimes used in horticulture. Often called toe_toe.
