Corus said Kevin Downey, 49, was “instrumental” in helping to tackle the 2001 incident in which three workers died.
Corus UK Ltd was fined £150,000 and £50,000 costs in December 2003 following the September 2000 death at the company’s Scunthorpe steel plant of locomotive driver Michael McGovern.
In February 2003, Corus was fined £10,000 and costs of £1,286 for safety offences related to the death of Bob Powlay, 54, at its plant in Portrack, Stockton.
Corus believed that such diversification was increasingly important, because many of its major customers--such as automobile makers and construction companies--were themselves consolidating.
