The Chronicles of Amber is a popular fantasy series by Roger Zelazny. ...
Corwin has dark hair and green eyes. His colours are silver and black. His symbol is a silver rose. Spoiler warning: Plot and/or ending details follow. The first series focus' on Corwin's bid for the throne of Amber after his father's disappearance. Although not first born, but due to the nature of his father's earlier marriages he was the first of the Princes to be born safely in wedlock and thus he himself considered himself to be the main frontrunner for the throne. Centuries ago whilst his father Oberon was still ruling in Amber he fought with his elder brother Eric, a bastard (technically though Corwin would have you believe more than just this. However, because Eric could safely walk The Pattern, one can safely assume he was indeed a legitimate heir of Oberon) and lost. Eric fearing their father's wrath dumped Corwin in shadow in Elizabethean England during the time of the plague. Corwin recovered, but his memory was lost and he proceeded to live out several hundred years of earth history until the seventies.
Abilities
As an Amberite, Corwin has supernatural strength as is shown in Nine Princes of Amber, where he flings a chair at the creatures that are attacking him, breaking the back of one of his assailants. Furthermore, he has long longevity, as he has been alive for centuries, with his memories on the Shadow Earth dating back to Elizabethan England. His heritage also gives him the ability to rejuvenate quickly as he did with his eyes after being cast into a dungeon by Eric. Being alive for centuries, Corwin is an excellent duelist, originally many believed that he was only inferior to his brother Eric and Benedict. This led to his defeat by Eric in their first and second duels, and after the second, Corwin was desposited in Elizabethan England to endure the plague. However, due to his time on the Shadow Earth he has increased his skills and defeats his brother Eric in Amber despite the fact he is forced to withdraw. He consistenly shows throughout the books that he is also a good improvisor throughout his fights, as he bests Benedict, supposedly the greatest swordsman who ever lived, by luring him into an area of the Black Road where vines entangle him. He also defeats Lord Borel, a master swordsman of the Courts of Chaos, with ease, despite the fact he used trickery to best him. His sword Grayswandir that he wields is the Nightblade, with its sister blade being Werewindle the Daysword, which Brand wields and Merlin finds in Knight of Shadows. Due to the fact Corwin has walked the Pattern, he has the power to shift through Shadow and find places he desires, locate military forces, or for any reason he so wishes. Like any initiate of the Pattern, he is able to lead forces through Shadow with him as the sole Shadow-walker as he did with Bleys' naval forces. After following Eric's instructions and Dworkin's notes, he becomes synthesized to the Jewel of Judgment, which allows him to control the weather when he wields the jewel. As the story progresses, it becomes apparent that the Jewel has many other functions, such as the ability to repair the Pattern and even create a new one, as Corwin did in The Courts of Chaos.
