Cosmicism was a philosophy that arouse around the 1920's, by the hands of Howard Phillips Lovecraft. Lovecraft was a writer of horror stories that mostly involved the macabre, and over time contributed to his invention of the philosophy.

The philosophy states that there is no God, and therefore humans are particularly insignificant, and perhaps are just a small species waiting to be wiped from existance at any moment. This also suggested that we are all but insects in a much greater struggle between greater forces than we, which, due to our small and unimportant nature, we do not recognize. The story that most greatly defined this was H.P. Lovecraft's Call of Cthulhu.
