Italian war in Soviet Union, 1941-1943 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (972 words)
In July 1942, Mussolini scaled up the Italian engagement in the war against the Soviets by sending new infantry divisions to Russia - the Sforzesca, Cosseria, Ravenna and Vicenza; along with Alpini mountain soldiers of the Tridentina, Cuneense and Julia divisions.
The situation remained stable until the 11th of December, when the Red Army commenced Operation “Little Saturn”, whose aim was the annihilation of the Italian positions on the Don river.
Soviet troops backed by tanks first attacked the weakest Italian sector, held by the Ravenna and Cosseria infantry divisions, who were soon driven back.
