Cottonwood Falls is a city located in Chase County, Kansas. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 966. It is the county seat of Chase County6.

Cottonwood Falls is located at 38°22'5" North, 96°32'35" West (38.368159, -96.542918)1.


According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.5 km˛ (0.6 mi˛). 1.5 km˛ (0.6 mi˛) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 966 people, 375 households, and 227 families residing in the city. The population density is 643.1/km˛ (1,674.9/mi˛). There are 427 housing units at an average density of 284.3/km˛ (740.3/mi˛). The racial makeup of the city is 94.93% White, 2.38% African American, 1.14% Native American, 0.21% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.83% from other races, and 0.52% from two or more races. 2.38% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 375 households out of which 28.3% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 47.2% are married couples living together, 11.7% have a female householder with no husband present, and 39.2% are non-families. 34.4% of all households are made up of individuals and 20.5% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.27 and the average family size is 2.93.


In the city the population is spread out with 23.2% under the age of 18, 6.1% from 18 to 24, 29.6% from 25 to 44, 18.1% from 45 to 64, and 23.0% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 39 years. For every 100 females there are 91.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 90.7 males.


The median income for a household in the city is $28,947, and the median income for a family is $37,986. Males have a median income of $27,639 versus $19,167 for females. The per capita income for the city is $15,166. 11.6% of the population and 8.8% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 15.0% of those under the age of 18 and 8.6% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
