Cotulla is a city located in La Salle County, Texas. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 3,614. It is the county seat of La Salle County6.

Cotulla is located at 28°26'3" North, 99°14'11" West (28.434144, -99.236343)1.


According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 5.1 km˛ (2.0 mi˛). 5.1 km˛ (2.0 mi˛) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 3,614 people, 1,208 households, and 901 families residing in the city. The population density is 708.3/km˛ (1,831.8/mi˛). There are 1,504 housing units at an average density of 294.8/km˛ (762.3/mi˛). The racial makeup of the city is 83.45% White, 0.64% African American, 0.39% Native American, 0.50% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 12.67% from other races, and 2.35% from two or more races. 83.56% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 1,208 households out of which 39.0% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 52.7% are married couples living together, 17.8% have a female householder with no husband present, and 25.4% are non-families. 22.6% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.8% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.95 and the average family size is 3.50.


In the city the population is spread out with 33.6% under the age of 18, 8.6% from 18 to 24, 24.0% from 25 to 44, 21.3% from 45 to 64, and 12.5% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 32 years. For every 100 females there are 90.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 87.2 males.


The median income for a household in the city is $23,250, and the median income for a family is $25,951. Males have a median income of $21,199 versus $17,415 for females. The per capita income for the city is $10,856. 30.1% of the population and 27.9% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 39.0% of those under the age of 18 and 28.1% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

Cotulla, the county seat of La Salle County, is twenty-seven miles north of Encinal on U.S. Interstate Highway 35 in the northwestern part of the county.
In 1974 the mayor of Cotulla was of Mexican descent, as were several members of the town council and two-thirds of the population.
