Encyclopedia > CounterPunch (newsletter)

CounterPunch is a biweekly newsletter published in the United States that covers politics from a left-wing perspective. It has a website which contains much more material not published in the newsletter. In politics, left-wing, the political left or simply the left are terms that refer to the segment of the political spectrum typically associated with any of several strains of, to varying extents, liberalism, socialism, green politics, anarchism, communism, social democracy, progressivism, American liberalism or social liberalism, and defined in...

Criticism

Franklin Foer of The New Republic and right-wing commentator Steven Plaut have written articles alleging that CounterPunch is biased against Israel and the USA, charging it with publishing anti-American, anti-Israel and anti-Semitic views.[3][4] For other uses, see the disambiguation section. ... Steven Plaut (born in 1951) is a Professor on the faculty of the Graduate School of Business Administration at the University of Haifa and a writer. ... Anti-Zionism is a term that has been used to describe several very different political and religious points of view, both historically and in current debates. ... Wikipedia does not have an article with this exact name. ...

Some base this argument on the increasing presence in Counterpunch of articles by explicitly anti-Jewish racists such as Israel Shamir and Gilad Atzmon. Among the latter's numerous publications on the Counterpunch site is a piece entitled "On anti-semitism" which argues that "we must begin to take the accusation that the Jewish people are trying to control the world very seriously…. They (Zionists) are especially annoyed when they are blamed for the death of Jesus…. … American Jewry makes any debate on whether the ‘Protocols of the elder of Zion’ are an authentic document or rather a forgery irrelevant. American Jews do try to control the world, by proxy… I would suggest that perhaps we should face it once and for all: the Jews were responsible for the killing of Jesus who, by the way, was himself a Palestinian Jew”. Counterpunch has also published pieces in support of Nazi holocaust denial, most notably Alan Cabel's defense of Ernest Zundel, author of "The Hitler We Loved and Why", entitled "Star Chamber Redux" which appeared in the journal's print-only edition. Counterpunch has also been criticised by socialist activists Tony Greenstein and Roland Rance of Jews Against Zionism, for its practice of publishing articles by writers such as Gilad Atzmon, which deliberately blur the distinction between anti-Zionism and antisemitism, while refusing to publish responses by activists attacked in these articles.
