Unlike a roadster, which may also have a soft folding top, a convertible has roll-up glass windows in the sides, and so the entire vehicle is "convertible" to an enclosed coupé.
Convertibles are usually 2 door models, only a few 4 door models exist e.g.
Later convertibles were made less often, and by the 1970s they had almost disappeared.

The New Class coupes were replaced by the 3 Series in 1975, and the New Six became the 7 Series in 1977.
Other cars, like the 6 Series coupés that replaced the CS and the M1, were also added to the mix as the market demanded.
Currently the 3 series coupe is only available in the fourth generation E46 body style (with a 2.5 litre in-line 6 producing 184bhp for the 325ci and a 3.0 litre in-line 6 producing 225bhp for the 330ci) until the middle of 2006 when the E90 coupes will be available.
