It is located in an area called Bernese Jura (Jura Bernois in French), which sits between the Canton of Jura and the German-speaking part of the Canton of Bern. The people of Courtelary speak French, although the canton of Bern is mostly German-speaking. The town is the capital of the district of Courtelary. Courtelary ist eine politische Gemeinde und Hauptort des gleichnamigen Distrikts Courtelary des Kantons Bern in der Schweiz und damit Sitz des Regierungsstatthalters.
Courtelary gehörte dem Kloster Moutier-Grandval, aber auch das Kapitel Saint-Imier besass Güter auf dem Gemeindegebiet.
