Courtland is a town located in Panola County, Mississippi. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 460.


Geography

Courtland is located at 34°14'21" North, 89°56'34" West (34.239122, -89.942670)1.


According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 2.9 km² (1.1 mi²). 2.9 km² (1.1 mi²) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 460 people, 157 households, and 127 families residing in the town. The population density is 157.2/km² (408.1/mi²). There are 169 housing units at an average density of 57.7/km² (150.0/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 64.57% White, 35.43% African American, 0.00% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 0.00% from two or more races. 1.30% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 157 households out of which 43.3% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.9% are married couples living together, 19.1% have a female householder with no husband present, and 18.5% are non-families. 17.8% of all households are made up of individuals and 6.4% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.93 and the average family size is 3.32.


In the town the population is spread out with 32.6% under the age of 18, 7.4% from 18 to 24, 30.9% from 25 to 44, 19.3% from 45 to 64, and 9.8% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 32 years. For every 100 females there are 100.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 86.7 males.


The median income for a household in the town is $35,729, and the median income for a family is $38,125. Males have a median income of $32,125 versus $19,375 for females. The per capita income for the town is $17,130. 16.5% of the population and 12.4% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 17.4% of those under the age of 18 and 24.2% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

Courtland's railroad was the fiber that held the town together and brought in much needed outside revenue.
The Courtland tracks, according to Snyder (1975) were known as the "Silk Stocking" Avenue.
Today, all that remains of old Courtland is the town's church, built in 1844, which has now been turned into a storage room for hay.
