After playing high school basketball at C.E. Jordan High School in Durham, NC, Alexander was selected by the Orlando Magic in the 2000 NBA draft out of Fresno State, and his rights were traded to the Dallas Mavericks on the same day. He played for the Mavericks for before being traded during his rookie season to the Washington Wizards where he played until 2002. He was then traded in the offseason to the New Orleans Hornets. A highlight of his career was a 33-point effort against the Toronto Raptors on April 18, 2001 when guards Michael Jordan and Jerry Stackhouse were both out with injuries.
