Cowden is a village located in Shelby County, Illinois. As of the 2000 census, the village had a total population of 612.


Geography

Cowden is located at 39°14'56" North, 88°51'36" West (39.248971, -88.860033)1.


According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 1.0 km˛ (0.4 mi˛). 1.0 km˛ (0.4 mi˛) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 612 people, 238 households, and 159 families residing in the village. The population density is 590.7/km˛ (1,526.3/mi˛). There are 270 housing units at an average density of 260.6/km˛ (673.4/mi˛). The racial makeup of the village is 98.04% White, 0.49% African American, 0.00% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 1.47% from two or more races. 0.00% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 238 households out of which 33.2% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 52.1% are married couples living together, 13.0% have a female householder with no husband present, and 32.8% are non-families. 31.1% of all households are made up of individuals and 15.1% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.57 and the average family size is 3.21.


In the village the population is spread out with 30.6% under the age of 18, 9.2% from 18 to 24, 26.0% from 25 to 44, 19.1% from 45 to 64, and 15.2% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 33 years. For every 100 females there are 88.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 84.0 males.


The median income for a household in the village is $25,938, and the median income for a family is $32,059. Males have a median income of $31,307 versus $24,792 for females. The per capita income for the village is $12,583. 19.8% of the population and 16.3% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 30.6% of those under the age of 18 and 18.3% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
