Coweta County is a county located in the state of Georgia. As of 2000, the population is 89,215. The county's explosive growth is evident with a population of 101,395 according to the 2003 U.S. Census Estimate. The county's county seat is Newnan, Georgia6.


Coweta County is part of the Atlanta Metropolitan Area.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,155 km˛ (446 mi˛). 1,146 km˛ (443 mi˛) of it is land and 9 km˛ (3 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 0.75% water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 89,215 people, 31,442 households, and 24,713 families residing in the county. The population density is 78/km˛ (202/mi˛). There are 33,182 housing units at an average density of 29/km˛ (75/mi˛). The racial makeup of the county is 78.86% White, 17.97% Black or African American, 0.23% Native American, 0.68% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 1.22% from other races, and 1.02% from two or more races. 3.14% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 31,442 households out of which 39.90% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 62.50% are married couples living together, 12.20% have a female householder with no husband present, and 21.40% are non-families. 17.60% of all households are made up of individuals and 5.70% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.81 and the average family size is 3.17.


In the county the population is spread out with 28.70% under the age of 18, 7.60% from 18 to 24, 33.40% from 25 to 44, 21.80% from 45 to 64, and 8.50% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 34 years. For every 100 females there are 98.00 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 95.40 males.


The median income for a household in the county is $52,706, and the median income for a family is $58,750. Males have a median income of $41,369 versus $27,322 for females. The per capita income for the county is $21,949. 7.80% of the population and 6.10% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 9.60% of those under the age of 18 and 10.50% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

The county's explosive growth is evident with a population of 105,453 according to the 2005 U.S. Census Estimate.
In the county the population was spread out with 25.90% under the age of 18, 12.90% from 18 to 24, 29.90% from 25 to 44, 21.20% from 45 to 64, and 10.00% who were 65 years of age or older.
This land was the last remaining portion of the Creek's Georgia territory, and was ceded by William McIntosh, chief of the Lower Creeks or White Sticks.
