The Cowpasture is one of the chief rivers contributing to the James River of Virginia. The Cowpasture rises from several small streams between Bullpasture Mountain and Shaws Ridge in NE Highland County. The upper course flows SW through a narrow valley floor. Midway through the upper course, it is joined by Shaws Fork and gains breadth but has little depth. Below Summers Mountain the Cowpasture passes through a narrow Gorge, and then enters into a broad valley. Shortly after passing intoBath County, and below the village of Williamsville, the Bullpasture River flows into the Cowpasture, which greatly adds to the its volume. For the next 20 miles the Cowpasture is joined by many small streams, and flows in increasingly wide bends. Below Milboro Springs the River becomes deep enough for year round boating. Before the River flows into Alleghany county there are several boat launch sites. Between Mill Mountain and Rich Patch Mountain, the River flows and is joined by Simpsons Creek.
