Background
The Crack Rock Steady 7 refers to seven musicians of the New York City crack rocksteady scene, most of which are the current members of Leftöver Crack. They get the name from the pre-reggae genre rocksteady, and their obsession with crack cocaine. Although the CRS7 was a band in its own right for a short time, it is more accurately an association of seven musicians. The Crack Rock Steady Seven played as the original 7 member band once. These 7 musicians also formed the bands Leftöver Crack, The Infested, Niño Zombi, Star Fucking Hipsterz, Choking Victim, Morning Glory, No Commercial Value, INDK, and probably many other side projects. Leftöver Crack sometime plays under the guise of the CRS7 at venues where Leftöver Crack has been banned. Today, the CRS7 generally refers to two different entities: the first being The Infested with Sturgeon on vocals and the second being a collaboration between Sturgeon and Mexican ska/punk band Niño Zombi, aptly titled the Crack Rock Steady 7 Mexico. These bands became hometown (C-squat in the Lower East Side of Manhattan where they squatted) legends for their innovative music and highly political lyrics. At the same time they also became infamous for their Satanic imagery and numerous references to the vagrant lifestyle such as crack-smoking, shoplifting, and squatting. They also, like many other bands in the punk scene, have strong anti-police sentiments in their songs. These bands prides themselves on their Atheism, often making sarcastic references to Satan, for the sole purpose of being offensive, rather than any sort of actual worship of the deity.
