In November 2002, DeRoche, a Republican, was first elected to the Michigan State House of Representatives to represent the 38th Michigan House district. The 38th district includes the communities of Novi, Wixom, Walled Lake, Lyon Township, South Lyon, and portions of Northville. In 2005, after being elected to a second term, DeRoche was selected Speaker of the State House of Representatives. He served as speaker until the Democrats took control of the House after the 2006 elections. In January 2007, he was sworn into his third term. Due to term limits, this is his final term in the House. Currently, he is the minority party leader. DeRoche is married to Stacey and has two daughters. He is a resident of Novi and a member of the Michigan Republican Party. He graduated from Walled Lake Western High School and Central Michigan University. Before being elected to the State House, DeRoche served on the Novi City Council. Prior to serving on the Novi City Council, DeRoche ran for the State House but lost in the Republican primary to Nancy Cassis of Novi. The Michigan Republican Party is the state affiliate of the national Republican Party. ... When Craig DeRoche is officially sworn in as speaker of the state House of Representatives, it will be the first time since the Civil War era that Oakland County has had such a powerful presence in that legislative chamber.
DeRoche, who trumpets fiscal belt-tightening by the state, also reversed his position on the recent accelerated county tax collection plan after being asked to support it by Johnson.
As for bringing home the bacon to Oakland County, DeRoche said he'll need to be mindful of balancing all of the interests of state Republicans, and that one region cannot thrive at the expense of others.
