Cranbury is a census-designated place located in Middlesex County, New Jersey. As of the 2000 census, the CDP had a total population of 2,008.


Geography

Cranbury is located at 40°18'26" North, 74°30'59" West (40.307108, -74.516403)1.


According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 3.2 km˛ (1.2 mi˛). 3.2 km˛ (1.2 mi˛) of it is land and 0.1 km˛ (0.04 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 1.60% water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 2,008 people, 703 households, and 534 families residing in the CDP. The population density is 625.2/km˛ (1,621.6/mi˛). There are 728 housing units at an average density of 226.7/km˛ (587.9/mi˛). The racial makeup of the CDP is 88.35% White, 1.89% African American, 0.00% Native American, 8.12% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.20% from other races, and 1.44% from two or more races. 1.49% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 703 households out of which 45.7% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 69.4% are married couples living together, 5.0% have a female householder with no husband present, and 23.9% are non-families. 20.3% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.2% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.79 and the average family size is 3.27.


In the CDP the population is spread out with 30.9% under the age of 18, 2.4% from 18 to 24, 30.1% from 25 to 44, 23.3% from 45 to 64, and 13.2% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 39 years. For every 100 females there are 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 86.2 males.


The median income for a household in the CDP is $104,444, and the median income for a family is $129,877. Males have a median income of $95,316 versus $44,500 for females. The per capita income for the CDP is $51,095. 2.2% of the population and 1.1% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 4.0% of those under the age of 18 and 1.4% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

EARLY HISTORY- CRANBURY NJ (947 words)
Cranbury was entered on the New Jersey Register of Historic Places on August 9, 1979 and on the National Register of Historic Places on September 18, 1980.
In its earliest days Cranbury was part of the colony of East New Jersey, which was granted to Sir George Carteret by the Duke of York and controlled by a board of twenty-four proprietors, who sold the land in parcels.
Cranbury is one of the oldest towns in New Jersey.
