Crawford is a town located in Lowndes County, Mississippi. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 655.


Geography

Crawford is located at 33°18'22" North, 88°37'19" West (33.306205, -88.621933)1.


According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 3.6 km˛ (1.4 mi˛). 3.6 km˛ (1.4 mi˛) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 655 people, 209 households, and 163 families residing in the town. The population density is 180.6/km˛ (466.7/mi˛). There are 251 housing units at an average density of 69.2/km˛ (178.9/mi˛). The racial makeup of the town is 5.95% White, 93.13% African American, 0.31% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.15% from other races, and 0.46% from two or more races. 0.61% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 209 households out of which 45.0% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 31.6% are married couples living together, 42.1% have a female householder with no husband present, and 22.0% are non-families. 20.6% of all households are made up of individuals and 7.7% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 3.13 and the average family size is 3.67.


In the town the population is spread out with 41.5% under the age of 18, 9.0% from 18 to 24, 25.6% from 25 to 44, 17.1% from 45 to 64, and 6.7% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 24 years. For every 100 females there are 75.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 67.2 males.


The median income for a household in the town is $16,786, and the median income for a family is $16,058. Males have a median income of $24,107 versus $14,359 for females. The per capita income for the town is $7,123. 45.7% of the population and 45.5% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 60.5% of those under the age of 18 and 35.3% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
