Crawford County (standard abbreviation: CR) is a county located in the U.S. state of Kansas. The county was named in honor of Samuel J. Crawford, Governor of Kansas. After serving as state governor for four years, Crawford—who was an American Civil War veteran—retired and led the 19th Kansas Calvary during the Indian Wars of 1868–1869. As of 2000, the population was 38,242. The county seat is Girard. The largest city in the county is Pittsburg, with a population of about 19,152. The second largest town is Frontenac, with a population of about 3,079. Girard has a population of about 2,687. Crawford County is divided into four major parts, with the following towns being the independant cities of the four parts--Frontenac, Girard, Mulberry, and Pittsburg. On Sunday, May 4, 2003, a very strong and violent F4 tornado touched down in western Crawford County at around 4:40 p.m. The tornado remained on the ground throughout Crawford County until it entered in Barton County, Missouri. The F4 was on the ground a total of 35 miles, until ending near Liberal, Missouri. The towns of Ringo, Franklin, and Mulberry, all in Crawford County, were devastated. The tornado cut a path of destruction across Crawford County roughly one quarter mile wide. Several F4 and F5 tornadoes hit Kansas, Missouri, and several other states that day, including the Kansas City metro area. Six deaths were reported in Kansas on that Sunday afternoon.
