Credit Action is the UK national money education charity.

Contents

Background

The charity's aim is to help people to stay in control of their money through financial education, empowering consumers through information, events for schools, colleges or universities and also offering more practical assistance - whether through training programs, targeted projects or providing practical tools to make money management easier.

The charity was founded in 1992 by Keith Tondeur with support from the Jubilee Centre and continued to work primarily through the church in the UK. For the next 10 years the charity steadily grew through the production of resources such as the Moneymanual series of guides offering basic budgetting tips, information of financial products and the basic skills needed to look after ones finances. This growth included the operation of a helpline offering debt and money advice. However the demand on this service was so great that the decision was taken in 2002 to transfer the helpline operation over to the Consumer Credit Counselling Service. Since then the two charities have worked on a 'prevention and cure' approach to financial wellbeing - Credit Action on the preventative side and CCCS on the curative. The historical links to the church remain but the charity looks to work across all society. // The Consumer Credit Counselling Service (CCCS) is a registered charity in the United Kingdom which has has followed the creditor funded American model of debt counselling. ...

Credit Action has continued to grow since then as debt and financial capability have become crucial issues in the UK. Credit Action also helps run the Moneybasics money information website, produces guides on issues of personal finance and work on specific projects aimed at helping people in areas of high financial exclusion, couples, prisons and more.
