Cresson Township is a township located in Cambria County, Pennsylvania. As of the 2000 census, the township had a total population of 4,055.


Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 30.7 km˛ (11.9 mi˛). 30.6 km˛ (11.8 mi˛) of it is land and 0.1 km˛ (0.04 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 0.17% water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 4,055 people, 1,045 households, and 688 families residing in the township. The population density is 132.3/km˛ (342.8/mi˛). There are 1,129 housing units at an average density of 36.8/km˛ (95.5/mi˛). The racial makeup of the township is 82.42% White, 13.69% African American, 0.20% Native American, 0.25% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 2.96% from other races, and 0.49% from two or more races. 3.48% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 1,045 households out of which 30.5% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.6% are married couples living together, 10.0% have a female householder with no husband present, and 34.1% are non-families. 29.8% of all households are made up of individuals and 13.6% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.50 and the average family size is 3.10.


In the township the population is spread out with 16.0% under the age of 18, 14.4% from 18 to 24, 37.4% from 25 to 44, 20.6% from 45 to 64, and 11.7% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 168.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 181.2 males.


The median income for a household in the township is $35,375, and the median income for a family is $46,908. Males have a median income of $31,836 versus $24,018 for females. The per capita income for the township is $12,575. 11.3% of the population and 7.1% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 10.7% of those under the age of 18 and 18.0% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

Cresson is the birthplace of the Arctic explorer Robert Edwin Peary, who was born there May 6, 1856, the son of Charles N. and Mary Wiley Peary.
By then the town was a major stop on the Pennsylvania Railroad, with offices of the local coal shippers, Mountain House, a brewery, a bank, a newspaper, a two storey department store, four hotels, a livery stable, a pool hall, a public school as well as Mount Aloysius Academy, and various tradesmen.
