Politics and history of the constituency

The constituency was created for the 1983 General Election, out of parts of the former Labour seat of Crewe and the former Conservative seat of Nantwich. Since its creation, the seat has been represented by Labour, with steadily increasing majorities until 2001; however, it is thought that a considerable part of the Labour vote is a personal vote for the veteran MP Gwyneth Dunwoody who has represented Crewe since 1974. In recent years substantial areas of upmarket housing have been built which may dilute the Labour vote in future.
