Cries and Whispers (original title Viskningar och rop) is a 1973 Swedish film which tells the story of two sisters who watch over their third sister's deathbed, both afraid she might die, but hoping she does. It stars Harriet Andersson, Kari Sylwan, Ingrid Thulin and Liv Ullmann. More than perhaps any other Bergman film, Cries and Whispers embraces colour, particularly crimson red. It's as if "Cries and Whispers," made in 1972, brought him to the end of his attempts to lance the wound of his suffering; his later films draw back into more realism, more sensible memories of his life and failings (for no director is more consistently autobiographical).
"Cries and Whispers" was photographed by Sven Nykvist, his longtime cinematographer, in a house where the wallpaper, rugs and curtains are all a deep blood red.
When "Cries and Whispers" was released, it had an impact greater than any other Bergman film except for "The Seventh Seal" and "Persona." In an extraordinary achievement for a foreign film, it won Academy nominations for best picture, director, screenplay and cinematography.
Cries and Whispers (1794 words)
Cries and Whispers offers a glimpse into the lives of these characters, the terrible effects of the emotional and physical pain they are afflicted with and the different ways they cope with their suffering.
In Cries and Whispers, the colors, and the images that they form, seem to be more important than the dialogue, and the entire film gives the impression of portraying a cinematic space belonging to Lacan's pre-symbolic, pre-linguistic realm.
All the characters in Cries and Whispers appear to be trapped in a complex web of emotions, unsure if they want to cry or to whisper at any given time, as if they were being torn apart by their conflicting feelings.
