Crittenden County is a county located in the U.S. state of Arkansas. As of 2000, the population is 50,866. The county seat is Marion. Crittenden County was formed on October 22, 1825 and named for Robert Crittenden, the 1st Secretary of the Arkansas Territory.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,649 km˛ (637 mi˛). 1,580 km˛ (610 mi˛) of it is land and 69 km˛ (27 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 4.17% water.

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 50,866 people, 18,471 households, and 13,373 families residing in the county. The population density is 32/km˛ (83/mi˛). There are 20,507 housing units at an average density of 13/km˛ (34/mi˛). The racial makeup of the county is 50.91% White, 47.05% Black or African American, 0.24% Native American, 0.47% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.66% from other races, and 0.64% from two or more races. 1.42% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 18,471 households out of which 37.40% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 45.80% are married couples living together, 21.30% have a female householder with no husband present, and 27.60% are non-families. 23.70% of all households are made up of individuals and 8.00% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.72 and the average family size is 3.23.


In the county the population is spread out with 31.10% under the age of 18, 9.40% from 18 to 24, 29.10% from 25 to 44, 20.50% from 45 to 64, and 9.90% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 32 years. For every 100 females there are 91.00 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 85.00 males.


The median income for a household in the county is $30,109, and the median income for a family is $34,982. Males have a median income of $31,299 versus $21,783 for females. The per capita income for the county is $14,424. 25.30% of the population and 21.00% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 35.30% of those under the age of 18 and 23.70% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
