It is speculated that the Roanoke colonists might have fled there. Reasons given for this include the colonists' friendship with Monteo, a native of Croatoan Island, and a carving of the word "C-R-O-A-T-O-A-N" into a post of the fort, which was supposedly done in order to let John White know where they had fled.
The USS Croatan (CVE-25) (previously AVG-25 then ACV-25) was an escort aircraft carrier launched 1 August 1942 by Seattle-Tacoma Shipbuilding Co., Seattle, Washington, under a Maritime Commission contract; sponsored by Mrs.
Croatan was placed out of commission in reserve at Norfolk 20 May 1946.
Reactivated, Croatan was assigned to MSTS in a noncommissioned status, manned by a civilian crew on 16 June 1958.
The Croatan were a Native American tribe living in the coastal areas of what is now North Carolina.
They were on good terms with English settlers of the Roanoke Island colony, and there has been speculation that the survivors of the colony joined the Croatan.
The modern Lumbee tribe has claimed descent from the Croatan and the English survivors.
