Encyclopedia > Cronquist system

A system of plant taxonomy, the Cronquist system is a scheme for the classification of flowering plants (or angiosperms). This system was developed by Arthur Cronquist (1919-1992) in his texts An Integrated System of Classification of Flowering Plants (1981) and The Evolution and Classification of Flowering Plants (1968; 2n edition, 1988). This list of systems of plant taxonomy presents “taxonomic systems” used in plant classification. ... Classes Magnoliopsida - Dicots Liliopsida - Monocots The flowering plants (also angiosperms or Magnoliophyta) are one of the major groups of modern plants, comprising those that produce seeds in specialized reproductive organs called flowers, where the ovulary or carpel is enclosed. ... Arthur C. Cronquist (1919–1992) was a North American botanist who wrote An Integrated System of Classification of Flowering Plants (1981) and The Evolution and Classification of Flowering Plants (1988). ...

Cronquist's system places flowering plants into two broad classes, monocotyledons and dicotyledons. Related orders are placed into subclasses. Orders Base Monocots: Acorus Alismatales Asparagales Dioscoreales Liliales Pandanales Family Petrosaviaceae Commelinids: Arecales Commelinales Poales Zingiberales Family Dasypogonaceae The Monocotyledons or monocots are an extremely important group of flowering plants, dominating great parts of the earth and with many economically important plants. ... Young castor oil plant showing its prominent two embryonic leaves (cotyledons), that differ from the adult leaves An example of a trimerous and non-eudicot flower: Magnolia Dicotyledons or dicots are a group of flowering plants whose seed typically contains two embryonic leaves or cotyledons. ...

The scheme is still widely used, in either the original form or in adapted versions, but many botanists are adopting the Angiosperm Phylogeny Group classification for the orders and families of flowering plants: APG II. The Angiosperm Phylogeny Group is an international group of systematic botanists who have come together to try to establish a consensus view of the taxonomy of flowering plants in the light of the rapid rise of molecular systematics. ... A modern system of plant taxonomy, the APG II system of plant classification was published in 2003 by the Angiosperm Phylogeny Group, APG, in Angiosperm Phylogeny Group (2003). ...

The system as laid out in An Integrated System of Classification of Flowering Plants (1981) counts 321 families and 64 orders:

Cronquist system: (151 words)
A system of plant taxonomy, the Cronquist system is a scheme for the classification of flowering plants (or angiosperms).
This system was developed by Arthur Cronquist (1919-1992) in his texts An Integrated System of Classification of Flowering Plants (1981) and The Evolution and Classification of Flowering Plants (1968; 2nd edition, 1988).
The scheme is still widely used, in either the original form or in adapted versions, but many botanists are adopting the Angiosperm Phylogeny Group classification for the orders and families of flowering plants: APG II.

The Cronquist system is a scheme for the classification of flowering plants (or angiosperms).
This system was developed by Arthur Cronquist[?] in his texts An Integrated System of Classification of Flowering Plants (1981) and The Evolution and Classification of Flowering Plants (1988).
Cronquist's system places flowering plants into two broad classes, monocots[?] and dicots.
