It was started in 1998 by Angus Fraser and Brad Weber. The label was created to function as a community of musicians helping each other and promoting each others work. The label in turn helps the musicians in every way possible. In the early days Crony Records released mainly records by friends of Brad and Angus as well as their band Lazyeye.
