The increasing success of the West Cork Brigade of the Irish Republican Army led to further arrests and interrogations of suspected IRA volunteers in West Cork in an effort to ascertain the identities and headquarters of those engaging in this new guerrilla warfare tactic facing the British forces, tactics that were most symbolised by the new Flying Colums of the IRA. By February 1921, as a result of the Upton Ambush, the British had succeeded in breaking an IRA volunteer and discovering that the West Cork Brigade had its headquarters in Ballymurphy.
