History In the early and mid 1900's, Croydon was a well developed farming community that featured several hotels, a general store, a church, a post office, a schoolhouse, and a gristmill. Sports Croydon is well-known in surrounding communities for its excellent athletes. Several community members have played major roles in leading local and high school hockey and fastball teams to provincial championships. Recently, Croydon resident Phil Hanna was honoured on the Stone Mills Sports Wall of Fame for his contributions to local hockey and fastball teams. Although Croydon has not had organized sports teams in over three decades, it has been suggested by some residents that a team name of 'Croydon Chiefs' be used for Croydon teams entering charity sports tournaments, due to the popularity of the movie Slapshot! among the residents. |
